Sedimentary Rocks

| Hi! I am Sally,
one of the rock cousins.
We are the sedimentary rocks. The name sedimentary
comes from the word sediment which means
to settle down into a place...like coffee grounds in the
bottom of a coffee cup, chocolate in the bottom of your milk glass or rocks beneath a
glacier. Sedimentary rocks may contain particles of mud, sand or pebbles which are usually deposited on what was once the ocean floor. They may also contain the remains of living things such as plants and animals. Over many, many years these sediments accumulate layer by layer, forming thick bands. The weight of the overlying sediments will pack down the layers below. Over time, the compacted sediments become sedimentary rocks.
