Kid LAW - the Mock Trial Program

Mr. Steve Brown, local attorney, leads Apollo fifth grade students through a mock trial.

An important part of the fifth grade social studies instruction is teaching about the American system of government. Mr. Steve Brown brought his Kidlaw program to Apollo where the students received instruction, practice, court observations and trial time in their classrooms.

The Kidlaw Mock Trial program begins with an "odd incident" where students learn about the reliability of eyewitnesses. In subsequent class sessions students learn about the various people involved in a trial: attorneys, judges, bailiffs, defendants, prosecutors, witnesses and jury members.

The week before the mock trials students went on a field trip to the Regional Justice Center in Kent to watch an actual trial.
