Robotics Workshop at Apollo

The MERLIN fourth grade classroom had some special instruction in robotics. Mr. Jansson, a MERLIN parent, came to the classroom for six separate sessions to talk about and instruct the class in robotics.

He brought "Lego Mindstorms: A Robotics Invention System" with him.  This is a set of building components that allows the students to build and program robots to perform certain functions.

The robots were programmed with "Not Quite C," a computer program created to program robots built with Legos. The main component piece was called a "RCX."  This is a big Lego block which contains the robot's computer.

Some robots were programmed to follow a line, others programmed to turn around when they encountered a wall.

There were two types of sensors used, light and touch sensors.  Light sensors can make robots turn around when they get to the edge of a table or run into a black object such as a piece of black tape or a dark carpet.  Touch sensors are used to make a robot turn around when it collides with something hard such as a box, chair leg, or other object.

The robots were also programs to create sounds, such as beeps or to play a song.
